When talking about tourist attractions in Hue, the most famous highlights are definitely the Hue Imperial City complex and the royal tombs and palaces. They are grouped together because tickets can be sold individually or as combined routes as follows:

Under the Nguyen Dynasty, there were 13 emperors, but only 7 had royal tombs built for them. Each tomb is located in a different area and has its own unique architectural style.

So what makes these places so famous? Here is a quick overview:
Hue Imperial City (also called the Imperial Citadel) was the political center of the Nguyen Dynasty, located within the Hue Citadel complex. Built in the early 19th century, it includes the Imperial City and the Forbidden Purple City. The Imperial City is surrounded by walls and a moat, with gates such as Ngo Mon Gate, Hien Nhon Gate, and Chuong Duc Gate. Inside are important structures such as Thai Hoa Palace (for major ceremonies), The Mieu Temple (ancestral worship of Nguyen kings), and the Forbidden Purple City (residence and workplace of the royal family).
Gia Long Tomb (Thien Tho Tomb) is the tomb of Emperor Gia Long, founder of the Nguyen Dynasty. Located on Thien Tho Mountain about 16 km from Hue, it was built from 1814 to 1820. The tomb has a simple, rustic but solemn architectural style. It includes structures such as Buu Thanh, Minh Thanh Palace, and Truong Minh Lake. Emperor Gia Long is buried here together with Empress Thua Thien Cao Hoang Hau.
Khai Dinh Tomb (Ung Lang) is the tomb of Emperor Khai Dinh, the 12th emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty. Built over 11 years (1920–1931), it stands out for its unique architecture blending traditional and modern styles. Located on Chau Chu Mountain about 10 km from Hue, the tomb is elaborately decorated with ceramics and glass, creating a luxurious appearance, especially Thien Dinh Palace with a statue of Emperor Khai Dinh.

Minh Mang Tomb (Hieu Lang) is the tomb of Emperor Minh Mang, the second emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty. Built from 1840 to 1843 on Cam Khe Mountain, about 12 km from Hue, it harmoniously blends with nature and includes about 40 structures such as Dai Hong Mon Gate, Bai Dinh courtyard, Sung An Palace, and Truong Minh Lake. It is surrounded by lush pine forests, creating a peaceful and majestic atmosphere.
Tu Duc Tomb (Khiem Lang) is the tomb of Emperor Tu Duc, the fourth emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty. Located in a narrow valley in Duong Xuan Thuong village, about 8 km from Hue, it was built from 1864 to 1867. It is famous for its poetic and tranquil architecture, including Vu Khiem Gate, Hoa Khiem Palace, Minh Khiem Theatre, and Khiem Cung tomb area. Surrounded by pine forests, lotus ponds, and flowing streams, it offers a peaceful atmosphere.
Duc Duc Tomb (An Lang) is the resting place of Emperor Duc Duc, and also houses three emperors: Duc Duc, Thanh Thai, and Duy Tan. Located in An Cuu Ward, Hue City, it has simple but solemn architecture including Tam Quan Gate, ceremonial courtyard, and worship hall.
Dong Khanh Tomb (Tu Lang) is the tomb of Emperor Dong Khanh, the ninth emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty. Located near Tu Duc Tomb, it was built from 1888 to 1923, combining traditional and modern architecture with intricate decorative patterns.
Thieu Tri Tomb (Xuong Lang) is the tomb of Emperor Thieu Tri, the third emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty. Located in Cu Chanh village about 8 km from Hue, it was built from 1847 to 1848 with a harmonious layout between nature and architecture, known for its peaceful beauty.
In addition to the Imperial City and these seven royal tombs, there are two other nearby historical sites included in the imperial heritage complex:
An Dinh Palace was the private residence of Emperor Khai Dinh and later Emperor Bao Dai. Built from 1917 to 1919, it combines European architecture with Vietnamese traditional elements, featuring intricate decorations and murals.
Nam Giao Esplanade was where Nguyen kings held ritual ceremonies to worship Heaven and pray for peace and prosperity. Built in 1806, it consists of three levels symbolizing Heaven, Earth, and the connection between them.
